Just Art
Just Art
Cleveland Visual art exhibit to explore social issues in Cleveland & beyond 06/08/2007 - 07/07/2007
CLEVELAND - The June 8 installment of the Tremont Artwalk
has issues-serious ones.
The event marks the opening of Just Art Cleveland, a new exhibition at Asterisk Gallery. The show features works by local artists who treat social justice issues, from workers' rights to body politics and a host of others.
Artists on view include Steve Cagan, Ronald Clayton, Pete Dell, Dana Depew, Chris Drosdick, Kevin Guckes, George Kocar, Heidi Larew, Julius Lyles, Frances Martin, Diane Pinchot, Angelia Thompson, Daiv Whaley and Sandra Unrein. Media include oils, photography, graphic design and sculpture.
Community activists Tim Marshall and Maria Miranda co-organized the show not only to feature these artists, whose brushstrokes and lens work bring political messages to life, but also to create an awareness of Greater Cleveland Community Shares, an organization both individuals have volunteered for over the past several years.
The pair got the idea for the show when Asterisk Gallery owner Dana Depew gave Marshall the keys to the gallery for the month of June as a birthday present.
"Our friends joke that we could be throwing one heck of a party," Marshall said. "But it only made sense to take advantage of this opportunity and create something meaningful out of it."
Miranda hopes that Just Art shows how the arts and social change groups can work together.
"Different social movements don't collaborate enough, and we need to," she said. "Community Shares helps facilitate that interaction, and we want the exhibit to show others how various causes are connected, and maybe inspire some people to get involved."
This large group exhibition is a perfect fit for Asterisk Gallery, which is often home to avant garde art and artists. Just Art is no exception, as it features works with both overt political change messages and piecesthat make a more subtle statement. A social justice show featuring works that inspire solidarity and incite r/evolution.
